Friends of Berkeley Library

We hope to set up a Friends Club when we are fully into our stride. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS NOW FOR FUND-RAISING.

Please Help your Library Now

Your Community of  Berkeley is keeping your Library going because some public spirited people have volunteered to be trained to perform the jobs of an "Assistant" Librarian and are are enjoying their time manning the desks, handling the books and doing the other things to keep a library running.

In addition to the Volunteer Librarians we have a valuable team of General Volunteers for other jobs e.g. cleaning, decorating etc.

WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEER LIBRARIANS & GENERAL VOLUNTEERS. Each librarian's shift is 3 hours. You choose AM or PM; Tuesday, Friday or Saturday AM and the number of shifts that you can do each month. Most Volunteer Librarians have been able to undertake one shift each fortnight or one a week. Some have undertaken more frequent shifts. Volunteer Librarians will be trained to use the TALIS computers for handling the movement of books etc. If you can help as a Volunteer Librarian or General Volunteer, please email the Library Secretary, Margaret Tayler.

Plans

When the Library is up and running we envisage restarting or introducing a number of schemes aimed at the elderly and the children; including the older children:

  • Restore for the housebound, the book delivery and collection service and the Library Club (with "Ring and Ride" to get you to its meetings).
  • Give A level students etc. on the job experience towards Library Qualifications/Scouting Badges and the Duke of Edinburgh Award for Volunteering.
  • Cooperate with the School Holiday Reading Challenge
  • It is hoped to maintain the children’s Library based activities such as Craft Club without serious interruption
  • Berkeley has an exciting heritage (an archaeological dig to define the Saxon Minster, The Castle, Dr Jenner, several Old Buildings, old crafts; particularly those based on the river, The Power Station, Sharpness Port, the Old Severn Bridge, etc.) We envisage providing space to advertise local organisations (e.g. BADS) and introducing a rotation of illustrative displays in the Library of documents, artifacts, photographs etc
  • There are a number of practicing artists in the area we will evaluate the possibility of having exhibitions of their work in the library.

Anybody interested in assisting in such activities is requested to contact our Secretary, Margaret Tayler
